Opal var. Hyalite on Pegmatite

Origin: Halk Mountain Mine (Mitchell County, North Carolina, USA)

The Halk Mountain Mine in Mitchell County, North Carolina, lies within the Spruce Pine pegmatite district, a region renowned for its feldspar, quartz, and mica mines. This locality has also produced a variety of accessory minerals, including rare gem and collector species. Hyalite opal from Halk Mountain occurs as glassy, colorless to faintly green botryoidal coatings and crusts on pegmatite surfaces, sometimes showing a bright green fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Such specimens are distinctive for their clarity and striking luminescence.

Opal var. Hyalite on Pegmatite

Hyalite is a water-rich variety of opal with the formula SiO₂·nH₂O. It forms as clear to translucent globular or crust-like coatings with a vitreous, glassy luster, often colorless but capable of showing green fluorescence due to trace uranium content. Though non-crystalline and relatively soft, hyalite is valued for its aesthetic beauty, glowing response under UV light, and occurrence on contrasting pegmatite hosts.
